Unfortunately my German is not nearly strong enough for me to be able to read 'The Ego and Its Own' here, in the original German. However, after reading (and pondering) it in the English (Byington translation), a nagging iota of uncertainty still haunted me in some regards of meaning and the reliability of the translation, due to the astonishing number of apparently glaring misconceptions and misunderstandings of the book --- even by prestigious professorial philosophers: malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance?

Two possibilities were available to double-check the understanding: (1) Chronological evidence of the development of Stirner's thought, to be found, it turned out, in Mackay's "biography" of Stirner (to be considered in another review) and references therein, and (2) Linguistic evidence in the form of the actual German words used by Stirner in important cases, to be found in 'Der Einzige und sein Eigentum', and in their German (and French) etymological evolution.

Happily, in both cases, I found only validation for Byington, and vindication for myself.

Several nice tidbits also came to me, adventitiously, courtesy of my very limited perusal of 'Der Einzige und sein Eigentum', of which I will give only this example: In youth, I remember being intrigued by the word "phooey", an odd-looking word which we used a lot at the time, and which seemed unrelated to any other "english" word: one of the unresolved mysteries of youth .... Right near the beginning of 'Der Einzige und sein Eigentum', I was treated to the following German sentence: 'Pfui über den Egoisten [Phooey on the egoist!], der nur an sich denkt!

Which enables me to say: "Pfui über die Philosophie Professoren, die nur an ihre Ideologie denken!"
